Years (decades!) later, I've had the privilege of contributing to the development and implementation of several conservation projects in Mexico, Central America and Australia. A crucial part is establishing a monitoring baseline to track site recovery over time. Fieldwork in this iconic region presented unique challenges: the heat reached 45°C, and waterholes were off-limits for swimming as crocodiles had somehow reached areas hundreds of kilometres inland from the coast.
